Tweeting from Buckfastleigh

posted 22 Feb 2011 17:21 by Stephen Wensley   [ updated 22 Feb 2011 17:36 ]

I took a different approach at Buckfastleigh on Sunday, Tweeting the results of the races to the EquusPrints Twitter page, where they were received by an audience made up of Jumping For Fun discussion forum users and existing subscribers to the Equus Prints tweets.

I started with the intention of just tweeting the results once they had been announced, but quickly noticed that Dom Bradshaw was also posting the North Carlton Point-To-Point running board and prices being marked up to the Jumping4Fun twitter account.

So I quickly learnt to take photos of these using the iPhone’s on board camera and edit the images using the photoshop express app to crop, adjust the brightness and sharpen the image, before uploading the image together with a caption using TwitPic.

Later I tried capturing the winning horse in the finishing straight or jumping the last, but encountered more limitations of a mobile phone camera, namely the lack of a zoom to get in close to the action, and a very slow response time after pressing the shutter button.

It was good to see some of the tweets referred to in the discussions following the days racing, so believe they were found useful by the people who received them.

The whole experienced proved quite time consuming, especially loading the images over a 3g connection. It would be difficult to combine all of this on a day when I was also taking photographs of the racing using my professional camera equipment, but I think there is scope to continue tweeting the result between races.

Photographing Dog Agility

posted 9 Sep 2010 16:07 by Stephen Wensley   [ updated 9 Sep 2010 16:18 ]

Recently I had the opportunity to try photographing a dog agility demonstration, and it was an interesting change from the racing. Those dogs, especially the collies have a real turn of speed around the course, making anticipating and timing all the more important. That in its self was challenging, as at times it seemed each run took a different and unexpected route - you have to stay on the ball and anticipate in this game! The camera was also challenged to its limits with the large number of black dogs, a difficult colour for a camera to autofocus on and even more difficult to keep the detail in the dog's fur, meaning the settings on the camera had to be changed every few seconds as the dogs ran between patches of sunlight and shadow. All great fun.

The one thing the day had in common with far too many point-to-point courses was far too much orange plastic fencing in the background, which always makes the composition much more challenging.

It was great to see the amount of enjoyment on the dogs, and owners faces though. All in all a fantastic day.

Modern Cameras, new techniques

posted 8 Apr 2010 15:11 by Stephen Wensley

Having a spare day on Bank Holiday Monday I decided to go along to the Taunton Vale point to point at Fennington farm and explore some of the new technologies my camera has to offer, namely High Definition video recording. It was certainly a steep learning curve and as the day progressed I came to admire how well companies like Westcountry videos do to capture the action and drama of the racing.

It also brought home to me just how quickly the horses are moving, for a clip where the field were bunched together over a jump, the clip lasted a mere 2 seconds. Where the field were spread out more it came more of a challenge to keep the camera steady and pan with the horses For me it was an interesting experiment, but its back to stills photography as Great Trethew and Upcott Cross this weekend.
